  1. First you need surfboards
  2. You'd need a business plan first. If it's a school project, probably doesn't have to be quite as detailed as if you were actually starting this business, although that depends on whether you're in high school, or getting your MBA. Some things to include - Where will your shop be located, and how big will it be? Are there any legal restrictions (licenses required, such as business license and sales tax collection license - you might find this info on your state website) What professional help will you need to set up your business (e.g. lawyer, accountant) and how much will that cost What type of entity will your business be? sole proprietorship? LLC? s-corp? What merchandise will you carry, where will you get it, how much will it cost to purchase, how much will you sell it for (what markup?) Will you have any employees or just run it yourself? Be aware that either way, there are income tax implications, but they're a lot more complicated if you have employees. How much money will you need to start your business - Rent, utilities turnon fees, purchase of initial inventory - and if your location doesn't already have them, shelves, hardware to hang things on the walls, cash register.... and where will you get the money? Probably combination of savings, investment by relatives and friends, maybe a bank loan but that could be tough to get Ongoing costs after startup What competition will you have? How will you get customers? How much do you have to sell monthly to pay your costs and make some amount of profit? How much profit can you reasonably expect to make? Is it seasonal? Have fun with your project - sounds like it could be interesting.
  3. I know being a business owner from home how hard it is to open a business. I work from home offering Health Benefits to family who can't afford insurance. It's rewarding and I enjoy helping people. One thing I would suggest in making your project easier is starting a work from home business where you don't have to have a product you have to purchase or make. So much work goes into the advertising and getting your product out there to make your business work that having to purchase surf boards and things like would be costly. There are hundred of work from home business where you can still run a business and pass your project. I did every work from home business out there and it took my 3 yrs to find one that brings in thousands. Be careful there are a lot of scams out there.
